Walk-in showers for elderly and disabled users

Bathrooms adapted for easier and safer use: level access and low-threshold showers, grab rails, fold-down seats and simple controls, fitted with the same care as any full refit.

Easier bathing without losing the room

Most people asking about an accessible bathroom want the same thing: a room that is safer and easier to use without feeling clinical. The good news is that the changes that matter most, losing the bath edge, adding a seat and putting grab rails where hands naturally reach, can be designed into a normal looking, well finished bathroom.

We start by asking how the room is actually used: whether the person showers sitting or standing, which side they step in from, and whether a carer ever needs to help. Those answers shape the layout far more than any catalogue. Our bathroom fitting page explains how the wider refit runs, and walk-in shower installation covers the shower options in more detail.

Level access and low-threshold showers

A level access shower has no step at all: the floor slopes gently to a drain and the whole wet area is tanked, so a wheelchair or someone unsteady on their feet can get in without lifting over anything. It is the most involved option because the floor build-up and drainage have to be right, and timber floors need checking for depth and strength.

A low-level shower tray is the simpler route. Modern trays sit only a short step above the floor, drain quickly and fit in the space a bath leaves behind. For many people the small step is no barrier at all, and the job is quicker and less disruptive. We explain both honestly at the quote visit.

Grab rails, seats and simple controls

Grab rails can be fitted as part of the installation, positioned where they will actually be used rather than where there happens to be a spare bit of wall. That means fixing into something solid, so the wall construction is checked and, where needed, the wall is built out or reinforced before tiling.

Fold-down shower seats give a stable place to sit without taking up room when not needed. Thermostatic controls keep the water temperature steady, and lever or push controls are easier for stiff hands than small twist knobs. A handheld shower on a riser rail works for both standing and seated use.

Layout, doors and flooring

Small details make the difference day to day. A wider, outward opening or sliding door gives easier access. A toilet at a comfortable height and a basin with clear space underneath help where mobility is limited. Flooring should be slip resistant, and level thresholds between the bathroom and landing remove trip points.

If you are converting a bath, our bath to shower conversion page covers that process, and a fully tanked room is described on our wet room installation page.

Working considerately in the home

Bathroom work is disruptive at the best of times, and more so when the person using the room has limited mobility. We agree the order of work so essential facilities are out of use for as short a time as possible, keep walkways clear of tools and materials, and tidy up properly at the end of each day.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fit grab rails in a tiled bathroom?

Yes. Rails can be fitted during a refit, where the fixing points are planned before tiling, or added to an existing bathroom where the wall construction allows a solid fixing.

Is a level access shower possible upstairs?

Often it is, but the timber floor has to be checked for depth and strength first. Where a level floor will not work, a low-threshold tray usually gives most of the benefit with far less work.

Can a bath be swapped for a walk-in shower in a small bathroom?

Yes. The bath recess is often a good size for a shower area. We check the space, the drainage route and the screen position at the quote visit.

Do you fit fold-down shower seats?

Yes. Seats can be included as part of the shower installation, fixed to a suitable wall at a height agreed with you.
