How Long Does It Take to Tile a Bathroom?

The quick answer by room type

These are the rough spans a working tiler plans around. They cover setting out, cutting and fixing, then grouting. They assume the surfaces are already flat, sound and waterproofed where needed.

• Shower enclosure walls only: roughly one to two days
• Half height tiling around a bath and basin: about one to two days
• Full height walls in a standard bathroom: around two to three days
• Walls plus floor: typically three to four days
• Wet room with a formed floor fall: longer, because the floor needs extra care and curing

Why preparation often takes longer than tiling

Tiles only look as good as the surface under them. Before the first tile goes up, old tiles or loose plaster may need removing, walls may need boarding, and any wet zone should be tanked with a waterproof system that is left to cure for the time its maker states. Floors may need levelling compound or a backer board over timber.

None of this shows in the finished room, yet it is where most tiling failures begin. If a quote gives a very short tiling time, ask what preparation has been allowed for.

What makes tiling slower

Two bathrooms of the same size can take very different amounts of time to tile. The main reasons are below.

• Small mosaics and patterned tiles take far longer per square metre than plain wall tiles
• Large format tiles are quick to cover area but need flatter walls and careful handling
• Herringbone, chevron and feature layouts add a lot of cutting
• Rooms with boxing, niches, windows and pipes need many more measured cuts
• Natural stone often needs sealing before and after grouting

Grouting, sealing and drying

Adhesive needs to set before grout goes in, which usually means grouting the day after fixing. Grout then needs time to cure before the shower is used, and silicone at the tray, bath and floor edges should be left undisturbed while it skins and cures. Rapid setting products shorten some of these waits, but the order never changes.

In practice this means the room is often usable a day or two after the last tile is fixed, not the same evening.
