Can You Tile Over Existing Tiles?

Why people want to overtile

Removing old tiles is noisy, dusty and often takes the plaster with it, which means reboarding before anyone can tile again. Tiling straight over the top skips that stage. Done in the right place, it is a perfectly sound technique. Done in the wrong place, it hides a problem behind a new surface and the whole lot comes off the wall later.

The five checks we make first

Before agreeing to overtile anything we go round the existing surface by hand. Each of these can rule the idea out on its own.

• Tap test: a hollow sound means the old tile has lost its bond, and anything stuck to it will fail with it
• Flatness: new tiles, especially large formats, follow every dip and lip in the old surface
• Weight: two layers of tile plus adhesive can exceed what plasterboard or old plaster should carry
• Moisture: any sign of water behind the tiles, such as stained grout or soft board, means stripping back
• Clearances: the extra thickness has to work with sockets, window reveals, door linings and the bath or tray edge

Where overtiling tends to work

A dry area such as a kitchen splashback, where the existing tiles are firmly bonded to a solid wall and the build up does not clash with worktops or sockets, is the most common success. Floors on a solid concrete base with well bonded tiles can also be suitable, provided the extra height works at the door thresholds.

Even then, preparation matters. Glossy glazes need cleaning, degreasing and priming with a product made for tile on tile work, and the adhesive has to suit both surfaces.

Where we would strip back instead

Shower enclosures are the big one. The waterproofing behind a shower is what protects the house, and you cannot check or renew it without taking the tiles off. Overtiling a shower wall also moves the tile face forward of the tray upstand, which can create a path for water. We also strip back where tiles are hollow, where the wall is plasterboard already carrying one layer, and on timber floors that flex.

It is also worth being realistic about what lies beneath. If the room is being refitted anyway, the extra cost of stripping back is small compared with the certainty it gives.

The finishing details people forget

Overtiling changes every edge in the room. Existing trims will be buried, so new edge profiles are needed. Socket and switch plates may need spacers. Toilet and basin fixings need longer bolts. The bath or shower seal line moves. None of this is difficult, but it should be on the quote from the start rather than discovered halfway through.
