How Long Does a Bathroom Fit Actually Take?
A bathroom is not slow because a fitter is slow. It is slow because several stages have to cure, set or dry before the next one can start, and no amount of pressure changes chemistry.
A typical week and a bit
For a straight replacement in an existing layout, most jobs run five to eight working days. The shape is fairly consistent.
- Day one: strip out, waste removal, inspect what is behind the old suite
- Day two: first fix plumbing and any alterations to pipework
- Day three: boarding, levelling and tanking the wet areas
- Day four and five: wall and floor tiling
- Day six: grouting, then second fix of sanitaryware and brassware
- Day seven or eight: silicone, making good, decoration and final checks
The stages that cannot be hurried
Tanking membranes need their stated curing time before tiles go on. Tile adhesive needs to set before grouting. Grout needs to cure before silicone. Fresh silicone should not be soaked for the first day. Skip any of these and the failure arrives months later, when it is expensive.
If a contractor promises a full bathroom in two days, ask which of those stages they intend to leave out.
What normally causes delays
Materials arriving late or short, a tile discontinued between choosing and ordering, rotten floorboards discovered under the old bath, and clients changing a decision midway through. The first two are avoidable by having everything on site before day one.
Living with the work
You can usually stay in the house. Water is off only for short controlled periods, the room is sheeted and cleaned daily, and if there is a second toilet in the property it stays in use. Tell us at the quote stage if being without a bathroom overnight is impossible and we will plan around it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a bathroom be fitted in a weekend?
Not properly. The curing and drying stages alone need more than two days, so a weekend fit means something important has been skipped.
Will I be without water for the whole job?
No. The supply is only isolated for short periods during first and second fix, and we tell you in advance when those are.
Can I use the toilet during the work?
If the property has a second WC, yes. If not, we sequence the job so the new toilet is connected as early as the programme allows.
What happens if you find rot under the bath?
We stop, photograph it, price the repair and agree it with you before continuing. It usually adds a day rather than a week.
