Does Artex Contain Asbestos?
Written by Robert, DK Construction Ltd
Last updated:
Some older textured coatings contain asbestos, but not every Artex ceiling does. You cannot determine the answer from the pattern, colour or a photograph. Before work that could disturb a coating, arrange competent assessment and appropriate testing rather than relying on its appearance.

Appearance and age do not identify asbestos
Artex is often used as a general name for a textured decorative finish. Different products and application periods do not all have the same composition. An old-looking swirl does not prove asbestos is present, and a recently decorated ceiling may still conceal an earlier coating. Painting changes the surface appearance without identifying the layers underneath.
Older buildings deserve particular caution, but age alone is not a test result. Records of renovation can help an assessor understand the ceiling, provided they relate to the actual material. A neighbour's test or a result from another room cannot establish what is in every coating in your property.
Arrange accredited assessment and laboratory testing first
Use a competent asbestos surveyor or sampler to plan assessment and any sampling required. Look for relevant UKAS-accredited inspection scope when appointing a surveying organisation, and a laboratory with UKAS accreditation for the particular material-analysis work. The scope matters: a general statement of accreditation is not confirmation that the service you need is covered.
Ask the professional to explain what the inspection and samples represent. Several materials, different repairs or concealed layers can require different consideration. Do not scrape off a sample yourself or break a piece from the ceiling. Sampling can disturb the material and should be arranged with appropriate controls rather than treated as a harmless household test.
Leave the coating undisturbed while it is uncertain
Avoid sanding, drilling, scraping, cutting or knocking back the texture before assessment. Those actions can release fibres if asbestos is present. Do not use a domestic vacuum to clear suspected asbestos debris or try to prepare the ceiling for a plasterer. Keep others away from damaged material and obtain professional advice about the next step.
If you discover a suspect coating during refurbishment, stop the disturbing work. A smooth finish cannot be made the priority over understanding the material. Overboarding and skimming may still involve fixings or preparation that disturb a coating, so neither option is automatically safe simply because the old surface stays in place.
What a positive result means for removal
A positive result does not by itself determine that every task requires a licensed asbestos contractor, nor does it mean the work is ordinary DIY. HSE distinguishes licensed, notifiable non-licensed and non-licensed work according to the material, its condition and the proposed task. Competent assessment must determine the appropriate category and controls for the actual work.
Searching for asbestos textured coating removal or asbestos Artex removal may lead to different services with different scopes. Ask an asbestos professional about the proposed ceiling work, contractor competence, waste arrangements and any notification requirements. This guide does not offer an asbestos removal method or claim that DK Construction Ltd undertakes asbestos removal.
A negative result has a defined scope
A laboratory result relates to the material sampled and the assessment behind it. Confirm with the surveyor that it covers the coating and work area you intend to disturb, including relevant layers or separate patches. It should not be treated as blanket clearance for every ceiling, adhesive or hidden material in the property.
Keep the report and share it with anyone planning subsequent work. The Artex ceiling removal guide discusses finish options, while Artex ceiling skimming explains the existing service scope. Assessment comes before deciding how a textured ceiling can be made smooth.
From safety assessment to the finish
Once the material and the proposed work have been assessed, discuss the condition of the ceiling and the finish you want. Its support, previous damage and surrounding decoration remain relevant even when the asbestos question has been addressed. The plastering hub covers surface repairs and finishing, not a substitute for asbestos professional advice.
Need it sorted? Book Artex ceiling skimming for an assessed ceiling and use the quote form to describe the room and provide available survey information. Do not collect a sample or disturb the texture to prepare an enquiry. Any separate asbestos work must be determined and arranged with the appropriate competent professional before the finishing scope is agreed.

Frequently asked questions
Can a photograph show whether asbestos is in Artex?
No. The texture and colour cannot identify asbestos content. Appropriate professional assessment and laboratory analysis are needed for a reliable determination of the material.
Should I send a scraped ceiling sample to a laboratory myself?
Do not collect it yourself. Arrange sampling through a competent asbestos professional and analysis by a laboratory with the relevant UKAS-accredited scope.
Does a positive textured-coating test always mean licensed removal?
The category depends on the material, condition and task. An asbestos professional should assess the applicable HSE requirements; non-licensed work still requires suitable competence and controls.
Is covering a suspect textured ceiling automatically safe?
No. Fixings and preparation can disturb the coating. Have the material and proposed task assessed before considering skimming, overboarding or other finish work.
