Blocked toilet: what to do and when to call

A blocked toilet is one of those problems that has to be dealt with today. The good news is that most blockages are in the toilet itself or the first stretch of soil pipe, and can be cleared without drama. The important thing is what you do in the first few minutes, because the wrong move turns a blockage into a flooded floor.

What to do first

Stop flushing. A single flush that does not clear is information; a second or third flush is a floor full of waste water. If the bowl has filled close to the rim, wait: the water level will often drop slowly on its own as water seeps past the blockage. Do not be tempted to keep testing it.

Take the lid off the cistern and check the water is not still running into the bowl. If it is, turn off the small isolation valve on the pipe feeding the cistern, or lift the float inside the cistern to stop the fill. Put old towels around the base of the toilet before you do anything else.

Why toilets block

The most common cause is something that should never have been flushed: wet wipes, including the ones labelled flushable, along with sanitary products, cotton pads and too much paper at once. None of these break down in water the way toilet paper does, and they catch in the bend of the pan or the soil pipe beyond it.

Less common causes include a limescale-narrowed pipe in hard water areas, a pan connector that has slipped and created a lip that catches paper, and objects dropped into the bowl. In older houses, tree roots finding their way into a cracked underground drain can cause blockages that keep coming back no matter how often they are cleared.

What you can safely try yourself

If the water level has dropped, a plunger used patiently is the one home remedy worth trying: enough water in the bowl to cover the rubber cup, a good seal over the outlet, and steady pushes rather than violent ones. Several minutes of this clears many simple blockages.

Beyond a plunger, stop. Chemical drain cleaners rarely reach a toilet blockage in useful strength, can damage older pipework and make the bowl hazardous for whoever works on it next. Poking wire or a coat hanger down the pan scratches the ceramic and usually pushes the blockage further in.

How a plumber clears it

Where the blockage sits in the pan or the connector, it can often be cleared with a toilet auger, a flexible tool designed to pass through the bend of the pan without damaging the ceramic. Where the blockage is further down the soil pipe, the toilet may need to be lifted so the pipe can be rodded directly, and the pan is resealed and refitted afterwards.

If blockages keep returning, clearing alone is not the answer. We look for the reason: a slipped connector, limescale build-up, or a fault in the underground drain, and explain what putting it right involves. Our plumbing service covers the full range of toilet repairs, and where the toilet itself has been damaged, our toilet replacement page explains the options.

Signs the problem is bigger than one toilet

If other fixtures are misbehaving at the same time, a basin gurgling when the toilet is flushed, or a shower draining slowly, the blockage is likely in a shared soil pipe or the main drain rather than the toilet. Water backing up anywhere it should not be is the clearest sign, and that situation needs proper investigation rather than repeated plunging.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fix a blocked toilet?

It depends on where the blockage sits. A blockage in the pan or connector cleared with an auger is the simplest job; lifting the toilet to rod the soil pipe, or investigating a repeating blockage, adds work. We quote before starting so you know the cost in advance.

Will a blocked toilet clear itself?

Occasionally a paper-only blockage softens and shifts, but wipes and sanitary products do not break down, so waiting rarely helps. If the water level is not dropping after a few hours, it needs clearing.

Is a blocked toilet an emergency?

If it is the only toilet in the house, or waste water is overflowing onto the floor, treat it as urgent. If you have another working toilet and nothing is overflowing, it can usually wait for a booked visit.

Can I use drain cleaner in a toilet?

We advise against it. Drain cleaners rarely reach a toilet blockage effectively, can harm older pipework and leave the bowl hazardous for anyone working on it afterwards.

Why does my toilet keep blocking?

Repeating blockages usually have a cause beyond what is being flushed: a slipped pan connector, limescale narrowing the pipe, or a fault in the underground drain. We investigate the cause rather than just clearing it again.
