Wallpapering and Wallpaper Hanging
Wallpapering changes the texture and pattern of a room, but the wall beneath still determines how well the finish works. Wallpaper hanging needs preparation, accurate set-out and the right paste method for the selected product. Confirm the paper and room details before ordering quantities.
Prepare a suitable wall for paper
Old wallpaper, flaking paint and repaired plaster can each affect the background. A wall needs to be sound, suitably smooth and prepared for the selected covering. New paper does not reliably hide loose layers, active damp or significant ridges. Removing the previous finish may reveal work that was not visible when the room was first photographed.
The wider decorating service covers preparation and finishing. For wallpapering, specify whether stripping is required and whether the wall has recently been plastered. The selected paper and paste instructions should guide sealing or other preparation, rather than assuming every wall needs the same treatment.
Choose the product and understand its instructions
Paste-the-wall, paste-the-paper and other wallcoverings have different handling requirements. Soaking times, adhesive compatibility and cleaning advice matter to the result. Delicate, metallic or textured coverings may show marks or seams differently from a standard printed paper. Supply the product reference and instructions before the fitting method is agreed.
A heavy covering is not automatically a solution for poor plaster. Equally, a subtle design may make an uneven background more obvious under side lighting. Consider both the appearance you want and the condition that must be achieved beneath it.
Pattern repeat affects quantities and layout
The usable length of a roll depends on the repeat and matching method, not just its nominal area. Large motifs, offset matches and tall walls can produce more offcuts. Check batch numbers where supplied so adjoining lengths are consistent. Ordering only by room floor area can leave too little paper to complete the walls properly.
Decide which wall or feature should anchor the pattern. A central chimney breast, doorway or main sightline may influence the starting position. Discuss how the design continues into corners and around openings before work begins, rather than finding the focal point after several lengths are hung.
Edges, corners and fittings
Real rooms are not perfectly square. Corners, ceiling lines and window reveals can require careful adjustments without losing a straight visual pattern. Door frames and skirting should be ready for their final junction with the paper. If woodwork is being painted too, agree the order of tasks so wet paint and fresh paper do not interfere with one another.
Electrical accessories must be dealt with safely; do not remove live fittings yourself to expose an edge. Radiators, fixed furniture and shelving can also restrict access. Identify these in the enquiry so the finish behind or around them is explicitly included or excluded.
Drying, care and quotation details
The room conditions should suit the paper and adhesive as they dry. Strong direct heat or abrupt changes can affect joints and drying behaviour. Follow the product guidance for ventilation and cleaning, especially for coverings that are not washable. A fresh surface should not be scrubbed or loaded with moisture simply because the pattern looks complete.
Wallpapering cost depends on preparation, product handling, repeat, openings and room geometry. Use the quote form with photographs, wall dimensions and the chosen paper details. Explain whether this is a feature wall or a whole room, and include stripping, repairs and associated paintwork so the scope describes the complete finish you expect.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a large wallpaper pattern require extra material?
Matching the repeat can mean unused sections between lengths, especially with offset patterns or tall walls. Calculate quantities from the product repeat and actual wall dimensions.
Can wallpaper be hung straight over a previous paper?
It should not be assumed suitable. Existing layers, adhesion and the new product requirements need checking, and stripping may be necessary to obtain a stable background.
Should skirting be painted before wallpaper hanging?
Agree the sequence for the selected finishes. Prepared woodwork and dry paint can help form a clean junction, but the complete room schedule should be considered together.
Does textured wallpaper remove the need for wall repairs?
No. Loose plaster, damp and significant unevenness still need attention. The covering may alter appearance but cannot stabilise a defective wall underneath.
