Exterior Painting
Exterior painting protects and finishes surfaces exposed to changing weather. House painting needs a clear distinction between masonry, timber and metal, because each has its own preparation and coating requirements. Start with what is failing and why before choosing the final colour.
Describe the outside surfaces precisely
An exterior painting enquiry might involve rendered walls, window surrounds, fascias, doors or railings. These should not be grouped into one undefined area. Identify the material and the current finish where known, and show the whole elevation as well as close-ups of peeling or damaged patches. The scale of the building matters, but so does how each surface is reached.
Our decorating service is the wider hub. This page concerns exposed outside finishes, not a promise to repair every roofing, drainage or structural defect that may appear nearby. Include those concerns so decoration is not planned over an unresolved problem.
Preparation means understanding failure
Flaking paint may follow poor adhesion, moisture, weathering or an unsuitable previous coating. Loose material needs attention, but simply scraping the visible edges does not establish why it failed. Cracked render, soft timber and rust each need a different approach. A new coat cannot restore rotten wood or stabilise a moving background.
Assess repairs before choosing a preparation method. Older coatings can also present hazards; avoid indiscriminate sanding of unknown paint and seek appropriate assessment if hazardous materials are suspected. Preparation should be selected for the substrate and coating, not copied from a method used on a different elevation.
Coatings matched to masonry and joinery
Masonry paint, timber systems and metal coatings are not interchangeable. Compatibility with existing layers, the state of the background and the manufacturer's application instructions all matter. Where moisture needs to escape through an older wall, the coating choice should take that construction into account rather than assuming every sealed surface is an improvement.
Discuss the intended appearance and maintenance implications. Strong sunlight, shade and neighbouring materials can change the way a colour looks outside. Confirm what will be painted and what will remain untouched, including brickwork, glass, paving and existing sealant lines.
Weather and safe access shape the programme
Exterior work depends on suitable conditions for preparation, application and drying. Rain, frost, excessive heat and strong wind can make a planned coating stage unsuitable even when the date has been agreed. The product guidance sets the conditions; a fixed timetable should not override them. Weather interruptions are a practical constraint, not evidence that a wet surface is ready to paint.
Access also needs planning. Height, boundaries, conservatories and neighbouring property may affect the working arrangement. Explain these early rather than assuming a ladder can reach everything. Any permissions, shared access or specialist access arrangements should be clarified before a start date is relied upon.
Requesting a useful house painting quote
Exterior painting cost is driven by preparation, materials, access and the amount of detail as well as area. A sound flat wall differs from intricate joinery with failing layers. Repairs, protection of adjoining surfaces and making good should be named in the scope. This page gives no price figures because the existing condition must be understood first.
Use the quote form with photographs of each elevation and a list of items to include. Mention any leaks or damp, previous paint failure and boundary restrictions. Separating those issues from the colour choice makes it easier to discuss a durable finish and a realistic sequence for your particular house.

Frequently asked questions
Can exterior paint go over damp render?
Not as a way of hiding moisture. Establish the source and allow the background to meet the coating requirements before painting; otherwise adhesion and durability can suffer.
Why can outside painting dates change?
Application and drying require suitable weather and surface conditions. Rain, frost, heat or wind may require a different sequence rather than applying a coating outside its instructions.
Does house painting include repairing rotten joinery?
Only where separately assessed and agreed. Paint is not a repair for decayed timber, so show damaged areas and distinguish repair work from final decoration.
What photographs help with an exterior quotation?
Provide whole elevations, access routes and close-ups of defects. Include high or obstructed areas rather than sending only a small sample of the visible wall.
