Handyman Hourly Rate or Job Price: How It Works
Handymen tend to charge either by the hour, by a half or full day, or with a fixed price for a defined job. The best value usually comes not from the rate itself but from grouping several small jobs into one visit, so travel and setting up are paid for once.
Hourly, half day or day
Hourly pricing suits a single quick task. Many tradespeople have a minimum charge because travel, parking and getting tools out take the same time whether the job is ten minutes or an hour. A half day or full day often works out better value once you have more than one or two tasks.
Fixed price per job
For defined jobs, such as hanging a door or fitting a set of shelves, a fixed price gives certainty. It works best when the task is described clearly and photographs are sent in advance, so the right fixings and materials arrive with the van.
Why a job list saves money
Most properties have a handful of small faults at any one time. Writing them down and booking them together means one call out, one set up and one clean down. It also makes it easier to see whether something bigger, such as a recurring leak, is behind several small symptoms.
- Doors that stick, drop or will not latch
- Loose handles, hinges, locks and window catches
- Shelves, curtain poles, blinds and mirrors
- Silicone around baths, showers and sinks
- Small plaster patches and touch-up painting
- Bathroom and kitchen fittings that have worked loose
Landlords and letting agents
Between tenancies, or after an inspection, agents usually have a list of small items to clear. Sending the full list with photographs lets us price it as one visit and complete it in one go. We report back with before and after photographs so the landlord can see what was done without visiting.
Our void property turnaround guide and HMO checklist show the jobs that most often come up.
When a handyman is not the right trade
Some tasks look small but need a specialist: gas appliances, consumer units and new electrical circuits must be handled by suitably registered engineers. We will say so if a task falls outside what we do rather than attempt it.
Materials and parts
Agree up front whether materials are supplied or bought on the day. For replacement parts such as handles or toilet seats, sending a photograph or model number saves an extra trip to the merchant.
How to book
Send your list, photographs and the property address. We will come back with a free quote and a suggested visit length. Our handyman work is covered by the same 1-year workmanship warranty as our larger jobs.
Making the most of a booked visit
A little preparation on your side shortens the visit. Clear the areas we need to reach, have keys and alarm codes ready for rented properties and let tenants know the time window. If a part needs replacing, keep the old one or note any model number. Telling us about parking in advance saves time at the start of the day, especially on busy streets or in blocks with restricted bays.
Recording what was done
For landlords and agents, a record matters as much as the repair. After each visit we note what was found, what was fixed and anything that needs a separate quote, with photographs. That record helps with deposit discussions at the end of a tenancy and gives a clear history of the property for future inspections, so recurring problems are spotted rather than patched over and over again.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum charge?
Many handymen have one because travel and setting up cost the same however short the task. Grouping jobs makes the most of it.
Is it cheaper to book a full day?
Often, if you have several jobs. A day booking spreads the travel and setup across all of them.
Can you work through a landlord's job list?
Yes. Send the list with photographs and we will price and complete it in a single visit where possible.
Do you supply materials?
We can, or work with materials you provide. We agree this before the visit so nothing holds the job up.
Can you do electrical or gas jobs?
Gas and notifiable electrical work need registered specialists. We will tell you if a task falls outside our services.
